Since 2016, our Middle School Career & Technical Education (CTE) pathway in Washington, DC has demonstrated what happens when workforce development, digital literacy, and youth entrepreneurship begin early and are sustained intentionally over time.

This is not a short-term enrichment program.

It is a longitudinal, career-connected learning infrastructure designed to move students from early exposure to professional confidence and postsecondary direction.

Career Readiness Begins in Middle School: A Student Spotlight

One of the clearest examples of long-term impact is Miajah’s journey.

As a middle school scholar in Washington, DC, Miajah:

  • Became a published author and placed third in a city-wide writing competition

  • Contributed to community awareness through public leadership events

  • Developed transferable communication and media skills

Today, she is a pre-med major expanding her academic and leadership footprint — and has returned to support younger students as an alumni contributor at national innovation events.

Her story reflects a broader educational truth: when students are given real responsibilities, community engagement opportunities, and proof-of-work experiences early, they build the confidence and direction needed to thrive academically and professionally.

The Genesis Moment: Corporate Investment Meets Classroom Innovation (2016)

In August 2016, a defining partnership helped showcase this initiative publicly. When Frank P. Bifulco, Jr., Executive Vice President of Staples decided to support literacy and career preparation initiatives in Washington, DC, it marked the beginning of a scalable corporate-to-classroom workforce bridge.

The initiative was featured on Great Day Washington on WUSA9, signaling national visibility and validation.
